Standards
There are various tests and standards that apply to protective clothing and choosing a garment can be a difficult task. The following section outlines the different options available to help you select the right product for your employees.
Types of protection
Depending on the materials and manufacture, protective suits can be designed for hazardous applications (with EC category III certificate) or non-hazardous applications (approved with EC category simple certificate 1). Products for hazardous applications can be tested and certified with six different types” of standards, providing information on the ideal use:
Other standards
Some of the protective clothing of 3MTm and its materials are approved for other standards and special applications
Materials
The following is a guide which gives a brief description of the materials used in the range of protective clothing 3M. What. Base materials may have treatments, such as an antistatic treatment, to improve the overall protection it provides.
Nonwovens of polypropylene
Provides protection for light work against non-noxious liquids and dust
Polypropylene directly spun and powdered (SMS)
The different SMS layers can be placed in different layers to adapt the physical and protective properties of the material. Standard SMS material offers high breathability and is a good barrier to dust and limited splashes of liquids. If it is, as in the case of the protective suit 4532+ of 3M, a higher level of splash resistance can be achieved.
Manufacture from materials of any heading
MicrMicroporous laminates’ offer a higher level of protection against liquid splashes, in addition to allowing some breathability.
Non-microporous laminates
‘non-microporous laminates’ can offer a higher level of protection against liquids. Adding several layers of laminate can also increase robustness and chemical resistance.
