Recommendations for choosing the right work helmet
In a large number of areas of work, the use of work helmet, a key element within the Personal protective equipment (EPIs) in all those work environments where there is a risk of falling at different heights or where a worker may be hit on the head by the tools or materials with which he is working.
The work helmet should be used appropriately, taking into account a number of considerations:
- It is important that the helmet is always securely fastened, without tightening or loosening the worker too much, as in this case he could move or fall and thus lose much of his effectiveness. In addition, the pressure on the skull must be limited so that it is well distributed.
- The material used for the helmet must be adapted to the characteristics of the job to be performed, there being on the market a large number of different models with greater or lesser weight, greater or lesser ventilation, etc.
- Check the condition of the helmet before each use, replacing it with a new one if any minor dents or deterioration are detected, as this could compromise the integrity of the operator.
All of it safety helmet must be manufactured in accordance with European Union regulations, which will be complied with by all helmets bearing the corresponding identification on the helmet, together with their make, reference, model and year of manufacture, in addition to the size.
In some cases it must also contain the maximum and minimum temperatures at which it can be used and other data relating to resistance to deformation or splashing of molten metal or to electrical insulation, among others.
Among the main elements of a work helmet are as follows:
- Headgear: The outer part of the helmet, hard and smooth, covers the entire surface.
- Visor: Depending on the model it can be worn or not, being used to protect the worker's eyes.
- The wingIt's the whole edge of the helmet that covers the cap.
- Harness: They are the different elements that are responsible for fixing the helmet above the head, making the helmet remain stationary and protect in case of a blow.
- Headband: This band protects the top of the head.
- Neck band: As the name suggests, it is designed to protect the back of the neck.
- It's just a little babble: It is an optional element used to tie and secure the helmet and is located under the chin.
