Protection categories in safety footwear

Depending on the class of footwear and the type of footwear (security, protection or work) and the application of the corresponding standard, different categories are determined:

Additional requirements for professional footwear are:
- P: resistance to drilling.
- C: Driving shoes.
- A: Antistatic shoes.
- I: insulating footwear. This requirement is only prescribed for Class II footwear (all rubber and all polymer footwear). Excludes footwear made of leather and other materials.
- HI: Insulation from heat.
- CI: Insulation against cold.
- E: energy absorption in the heel.
- WR: It's water resistant. This requirement is only prescribed for Class I footwear (footwear made of leather and other materials). All rubber and all polymer footwear is excluded.
- M: Protection of the metatarsal. Not applicable to work footwear for professional use (EN ISO-20347).
- AN: Protection of the ankle.
- WRU: Resistance to water absorption and penetration. This requirement is only prescribed for Class I footwear (footwear made of leather and other materials). All rubber and all polymer footwear is excluded.
- CR: Cutting resistance. Not applicable to work footwear for professional use (EN ISO-20347).
- HRO: Usually heat resistant.
- FO: Resistance to hydrocarbons from the sole. Not required on professional footwear (EN ISO-20347)
All footwear for professional use placed on the market must bear the following marking:
- Cutting
- Identification mark of the manufacturer.
- Manufacturer's type designation.
- Year of manufacture and at least quarter.
- The number and year of the relevant European Standard, e.g. UNE-EN ISO 20345:2005.
- Symbols for the protection offered or, where applicable, the corresponding category.
- If applicable, corresponding pictogram, such as chainsaw boot.
