APPROVALS
The mask 3M 8822 meets the Basic Safety Requirements specified in Articles 10 and 11B of European Community Directive 89/686 (transposed into Spanish law on R.D. 1407/1992) and the. The product is therefore CE marked.
REGULATORY
This product has been tested in accordance with the NEW European Standard EN149:2001 and meets the requirements of category FFP2 of that standard.
The main tests to evaluate their performance are:
• Total leak inward
Ten people undergo a series of exercises while walking on a moving tape with the mask on. It measures the total amount of pollutant passing through
inside the mask due to leakage through the filter, facial seal and, where applicable, through the valve. For a mask classified as FFP2 the total leakage shall not exceed 8% for eight out of ten results obtained.
• Penetration of the filter
The effectiveness of the filter is tested on twelve masks using a sodium chloride spray and also a paraffin oil spray. For category FFP2 the penetration of both test substances should be less than 6%.
• Flammability
Four masks are passed through a flame at 800°C
+/- 50 °C at a speed of 5 cm/sec. The mask must not continue to burn once it has been removed from contact with the flame.
• Resistance to breathing
The resistance created by the mask when passing an airflow of 30 l/min is assessed. and 95 l/min. For equipment classified as FFP2 it should not exceed 0.7 mbar and 2.4 mbar respectively.
• Other information
The standard specifies the complete information that must appear on the mask packaging: adjustment instructions, limits of use, etc. Standard EN149:2001 can be obtained from the Spanish Association for Standardisation (AENOR).
ADJUSTMENT INSTRUCTIONS
Place the mask on your hand with the metal part of your nose facing your fingertips and let the adjustment bands hang freely under your hand.
Place the mask on the bar-ball with the nose clip up.
Pull out the top band and place it over the back of your head, over your ears. Pull the lower band and place it on the back of the neck.
By placing the fingertips of both hands over the center of the nasal clip, mold the metal part by pressing and moving the fingers to both sides of the nasal part. Carrying out this operation with one hand can lead to a poor fit of the clip and therefore to a lower effectiveness in protection.
Before entering the working area, check that the mask is properly fitted. To do this, perform the following test:
(a) Cover the front of the mask with both hands, taking care not to change the position of the mask.
(b) Exhale with energy. You must feel positive pressure inside
of the mask. If any pressure loss or air leakage from the edges is detected, readjust the position of the mask and/or the tension of the adjustment bands. Check the adjustment again and repeat the operation until the mask is perfectly adjusted.
NOTE: Do not use with a beard or other facial hair that may prevent perfect contact between the face and the mask.
WARNINGS
• As with any other respiratory protective equipment, the wearer must be trained on how to use the equipment correctly.
• This mask does not protect against gases, vapours, solvents from spray paint operations or oxygen-deficient atmospheres (< 19.5%).
• Use only in properly ventilated areas where there is no oxygen deficiency situation.
• Do not use when contaminant concentrations exceed the IDHL (immediately hazardous to life or health).
• Leave the area immediately if:
* Breathing becomes difficult
* Feel dizzy or other discomfort
• Change or replace the mask if it has been damaged, if the respiratory resistance becomes excessive, or if it has reached the end of its useful life.
• Do not modify or alter the equipment
• All respiratory protection is effective if the correct equipment has been selected, is placed correctly, and is used throughout the exposure.
3M and SEKURECO offer a comprehensive advisory service including training courses, implementation of respiratory protection programmes and technical support to answer all your questions.
